With the arrival of phone cameras and social media sites, it seems everyone is a photographer nowadays. Investors who enjoy photography and want to add a new hard asset to their portfolios, however, might want to consider purchasing historic, collectible photos or contemporary photos taken with stand-alone cameras.
Like other fine art markets, it’s misleading to speak of a single photography market, because there are multiple sub-markets.
Denise Bethel, head of the photographs department at Sotheby’s in New York, notes that classic photos—the equivalents of blue-chip stocks—are a major category. Several of these photos, often dating from the early 20thCentury, each have sold for over $1 million at auction.
There’s also a thriving market in contemporary photography, says Bethel, and the top photos in that category can command seven figures.
The variety of categories gives collectors considerable range of choice.
“We do have collectors who collect across the board,” says Bethel. “So, for instance, collectors who start with Daguerreotypes and go all the way to contemporary photography.

News Corp. is a media and information services company that has recently spun-off of its very profitable entertainment segment. The companyreported its first quarterly financial results after splitting from 21st Century Fox. The stock has seen progress but is now pulling back as investors book gains. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been on the rise, which has left investors optimistic about the company. Relative to its peers and sector, News Corp. has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what News Corp. does this quarter.

At the time, NDS Group was 80% owned by News Corp (NWSA) and they were providing the smart cards for all Direct TV (DTV) receivers. Further, they were one of only three smart card providers and one of their competitors, Canal Plus a Vivendi subsidiary, was struggling with maintaining the security of their smart card systems which they were providing to non-News Corp television companies throughout Europe. It seems that the access codes on their systems were turning up on the internet and bootleggers were stealing the signals. EcoStar, which would later be spun off by DISH, was making the same claims back in the 1990s. Both companies maintained that News Corp, acting through its subsidiary NDS Group, was the culprit. To make a long story short, Canal Plus filed a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against News Corp and later on EcoStar would follow suit.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Geoff Gannon] toZone (AZO) and Dun and Bradstreet (DNB) are examples. All have great track records for business and stock price growth long term so this appears to be a strategic decision to finance through debt rather than equity. My question is at what point can an investor judge that this practice is no longer creating value but adding risk to the investment? There can obviously be too much leverage. However when money is cheap to borrow and ROIC is high this seems like a great way to create value for shareholders, to just borrow at 3% and buy stock with an ROIC over 20%, but how much is too much?
Thank you,

DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV ) stock surged when the company announced earnings results earlier this week, easily beating analyst estimates and highlighting the importance of sports programming to TV providers in driving revenues and profits. In the earnings call that followed the release, CEO Mike White was cagey about the future of the company's relationship with the NFL that costs about $1 billion per year and is set to expire in 2015. The market reacted well to the news, driving up DIRECTV stock by nearly 7% on the news, and allowing it to reach its highest level in a decade.

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.
Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.
TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

Time Warner threats
AMC Networks plans to launch the 10-episode series Halt and Catch Fire this June. Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH ) will transmit several Disney channels on an a la carte basis, threatening Time Warner's premium-cable-channel advantage. Time Warner has delayed the launch of Batman vs. Superman. One dividend to rule them all
In this writer's humble opinion, it seems that Disney has a better shot at long-term outperformance, thanks to its ubiquitous brand recognition and a more diversified business model. The company is likely to wind up creating more film franchises with the launch of Marvel's new X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy comics series. Orlando's recent airport expansion project should also help lure a large number of new visitors to the legendary Disney World theme park. The company's combined properties seem more defensible than Time Warner's, which is the key differentiator in long-term investing for this type of industry. You might disagree, and if so, you're encouraged to share your viewpoint in the comments below. No dividend is completely perfect, but some are bound to produce better results than others. Hasbro, Inc. (HAS) has been on the radar of many investment gurus like Paul Tudor Jones (Trades, Portfolio) and John Hussman (Trades, Portfolio) for some time now, given its position as the second largest toy manufacturer in the industry, only outranked by Mattel, Inc. (MAT). But the company first quarter earnings report showed that it could possibly outperform industry giant and rival Mattel in terms of growth, as Europe and Latin America registered 8% and 17% growth respectively, while Mattel saw declines in the same regions. Furthermore, quarterly earnings were driven mainly by the girlscategory, which sported a 20% increase in demand for My Little Pony, Equestria Girls, and Nerf Rebelle products. So, with profitability on the right track, what can investors expect from this industry player in the long term?Licensing agreements and emerging market growthAlthough Hasbro quarterly earnings were boosted by the girlstoy category, while the boyssegment showed merely 2% growth, fiscal 2014 should balance out the segments when the Transformers and Spiderman films launch in the second quarter. Working Through the Niche
As the niche cable network provider in the media industry, Discovery flagship channel addresses topics like science, technology, history and exploration. With TLC, Animal Planet and Discovery as the three key domestic channels, the company reaches 100 million households, and despite the mature U.S. market, sales have grown 6% and revenue 10% in fiscal 2013. This is mainly due to the media giant unique content programming and line-up refreshments. Hit shows like Shark Week, for example, have become so popular through advertising that the network experienced in 2013 its all-time best viewership with over 50 million viewing rates during one episode. The men lifestyle cable network, Velocity, also experienced a 30% viewership increase in quarter four of 2013, and is now the fastest-growing network in that segment.

Cable TV and Internet provider Time Warner Cable Inc (TWC) on Tuesday received some positive sentiment from an analyst at BITG Research.
The firm reiterated its “Buy” rating on TWC and lifted its price target from $80 to $160. Analyst Richard Greenfield feels the company shouldn’t be in a hurry to sell, given its internal performance is improving.
Greenfield commented, “While laying out all the potential acquisition scenarios spanning multiple companies and joint bids is far too complex, we believe the operational efficiencies and improved clustering of a TWC acquisition/breakup should warrant value of at least $160.” Both Charter Communications (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCA) are considered potential suitors for TWC, which is exploring a sale amid an expected upcoming era of consolidation for the cable television industry. Cable providers have been feeling the heat from Internet-based media services like Netflix, Hulu, and others, which offer consumers on-demand movies and TV shows for relatively low monthly fees.
Time Warner Cable shares were inactive in pre-market trading Tuesday. The stock has gained about 36% year-to-date.
