Top Shipping Stocks To Watch For 2015

SAN FRANCISCO A mysterious four-story barge floating near Treasure Island here has people wondering what Google is up to.

A local TV station and CNET offer two theories behind the contents of the boat, which is stacked with shipping containers.

CBS-affiliate KPIX, citing an unnamed source close to the project, says Google is constructing an Apple Store-like marketing center for Google Glass.

CNET says it might be a water-based data center, citing a patent filed by Google for such a thing in 2007.

Google had no comment.

A barge similar to the one in San Francisco is in the waters off Portland, Maine.

The search giant plans to have the barge towed to San Francisco's nearby Fort Mason, where it will be open to the public, the unnamed source told KPIX.

CNET, quoting an anonymous source identified as an independent marine engineer, says Google wants to build a backup data center in the event of a natural disaster. The barge in San Francisco would be one of a dozen data centers worldwide, the source said.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks have ended with losses in every session this week, and sure enough, the Nikkei Average (JP:NIK) was down 0.6% in early Friday trade, though off an opening 0.8% defecit, while the Topix carried a 0.7% loss. Overnight losses for the U.S. and further strength in the yen (with the dollar falling to 楼101.28 from 楼101.56 a day earlier) helped drag the market lower, as did results from Fast Retailing Co. (JP:9983) (FRCOF) , the shares of which hold the heaviest weighting on Nikkei Average. Fast Retailing said that while its Uniqlo brand was doing great business, weakness for its J Brand luxury demin label helped send September-May profit down 4% and prompted another cut to Fast's full-year outlook. Consequently, its shares traded 0.7% lower, though rivals Takashimaya Co. (JP:8233) and J. Front Retailing Co. (JP:3086) (JFROF) also saw losses of 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively. Among other decliners, Sony Corp. (JP:6758) (SNE) lost 0.7%, Toshiba Corp. (JP:6502) (TOSYY) fell 2.1%, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (JP:7012) (KWHIY) fell 1.5%, Toyota Motor Corp. Advisors' Opinion:

But Yamana has benefited from its low cost structure, and it only intends to make its operations even cheaper going forward in light of low gold prices. Despite already having cash operating costs of less than $400 per ounce, the company expects to cut those costs by another $100 per ounce, doing its best to increase efficiency and maximize profit margins in a tough environment. Weak prices for byproduct metals like copper and zinc have added to Yamana's woes, but it and peer Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) have kept enough of a lid on their expenses to remain profitable even with gold at current levels.

Shares of Barrick Gold have gained 0.4% to $16.81 today, despite the fact that the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has dropped 0.7% to $23.87 and big miners Newmont Mining (NEM) and Goldcorp (GG) have fallen 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively.

    One lustrous investment
If you hadn't guessed by now, I'm a big fan of gold and gold miners. There are multiple factors at the moment that I feel could usher in another rally in gold prices. These include weak global economies, which make gold an attractive safe-haven investment; low domestic interest rates, which make gold attractive relative to low-yielding CDs and bonds; copious U.S. money printing, which could lead to inflation; and a contrarian mentality to buy when others are fearful. That's why I think investors would be foolish to pass up on cost-efficiency mining expert Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) at its current levels.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

The end of last week saw a trifecta of bad news for gold miners, even as the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) showed a measure of strength. Randgold (NASDAQ: GOLD  ) saw earnings weakness, Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) was downgraded, and Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) missed earnings estimates significantly. The interplay between the gold commodity and the gold miners has been particularly interesting of late, making this a good time to consider gold mining stocks and their prospects moving forward.

Another indicator is the "exit strategy through merger" activity which is also a "growth through merger" strategy. This is one we have been seeing more of recently. Two top examples are American Realty Capital Properties, Inc.'s (ARCP) acquisition of the non-traded REIT American Realty Capital Trust IV ("ARCT IV") and W.P. Carey's (WPC) $2.4B acquisition of the non-traded REIT Corporate Property Associates 16-Global Inc.

    Thursday's Volume: 252,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 119,789

    Volume % Change: 75%

From a technical perspective, EIG jumped notably higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $26.48 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $21.03 to its recent high of $29.12. During that move, shares of EIG have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of EIG within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if EIG manages to take out its 52-week high at $29.18 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EIG as long as it's trending above Thursday's low of $27.65 or above its 50-day at $26.48 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $29.18 with volume that's near or above 119,789 shares. Advisors' Opinion:

Margins matter. The more DXP Enterprises (Nasdaq: DXPE  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong DXP Enterprises's competitive position could be.

The following chart takes a comparative look at some widely held ETFs/CEFs holding different types of bonds. The objective is to visualize not only how much these products cost, but also to break down the percent of total yield depleted by management fees. I define total yield as current annualized yield plus net fees - in other words the yield of the fund if there were no management fees attached. The funds we will examine are aforementioned BND, iShares 20+ Treasury Bond (TLT), iShares High-Yield Corporate (HYG), Nuveen Municipal Value (NUV), Eaton Vance Limited Duration (EVV) and Alliance Bernstein Global High-Yield (AWF).
