Railroads from Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC ) to Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP ) have been dealing with a declining coal trade in the United States. Although that negative trend hasn't changed yet, there are some key signs of an upturn to watch for.
Natural gas stole the show
New drilling methods quickly led to a glut of natural gas. That depressed prices and led to increased use of gas for electricity. The fact that it is cleaner burning also helped it steal market share from coal-fired power plants.
Natural gas is generally transported through pipelines owned by companies likeEnterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD ) . Increased gas supply and demand has allowed it, along with many others, to expand their pipeline operations. And that growth should continue to reward shareholders, too. Enterprise and its toll-taker business model has increased its distribution for 36 consecutive quarters.
Coal, which is generally sent by rail, on the other hand, has seen utility demand fall off. That's been bad news for coal companies with large U.S. thermal operations, like Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU ) , and for the railways that carry the fuel. Peabody saw its U.S. coal volume fall around 8% in the first half.

Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX ) and its master limited partnership Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP ) have made the headlines recently, because of how high PSXP climbed during its first day of trading. It isn't the first refiner to find success with an MLP spinoff -- Marathon Petroleum's (NYSE: MPC ) spinoffMPLX (NYSE: MPLX ) is up more than 16% year to date -- and it doesn't look as if it will be the last. In this video, Fool.com contributor Aimee Duffy looks at Valero's (NYSE: VLO ) recent affirmation of its plan to convert its logistics assets into an MLP.

Refiners like Phillips 66(PSX), Valero Energy(VLO), Holly Frontier(HFC), Marathon Petroleum(MPC) and Tesoro (TSO) had a painful start to the year. The pain might be about to turn to gain, according to Barclays.
Bloomberg NewsBarclays’Paul Cheng explains why:
While the US refining industry has seen headwinds with the narrowing Brent-LLS differential, we continue to believe the US refining segment will rank among the market best-performing groups over the next 1-2 years…
We believe that the narrow LLS-Brent differential during the past two months has primarily been the result of poor weather affecting both production and the logistics necessary to transport the production to refineries…
Cheng says investors should overweight the entire US refining industry, but is particularly fond of Valero Energy, which is “best positioned to take advantage of the changing Gulf Coast crude oil landscape,” and Tesoro, when “investors start to shift their focus to relative underperformers within the refining sector.”
Shares of Valero Energy have gained 0.4% to $54.45, while Tesoro has dropped 0.7% to $52.85, so I guess investors aren’t ready for the underperformers yet. Phillips 66 has risen 0.7% to$79.23, Holly Frontier has dipped 0.1% to $49.71 and Marathon Petroleum has ticked down 0.1% to $93.93.

Furthermore, yesterday we found on the news that General Electric will buy Alstom SA (ALO), the French builder of power plants and transmission gear. The deal could consist on the separation of Alstom transport business, which manufactures high-speed TGV trains, to make easier the approval of the French government. A potential value for Alstom at about $13 billion would be about 25 percent more than its current market value. As a consequence, stock price surged as much as 18 percent in Paris, the biggest jump in the last nine years. General Electric will gain control of Alstom technology for power transmission and power plant maintenance.
