Top 5 Dividend Companies To Own In Right Now

Iron Mountain (IRM) has bet heavily that it’s conversion to a real-estate investment trust would arrest its declining share price. But Don’t count on a permanent benefit without major changes, according to a Jefferies report released today.

Jefferies’ Dan Dolev and Trevor Young explain:

For many years, the durability of IRM’s paper storage business (74% of GP) has made it synonymous with stability, but our proprietary survey highlighting a dramatic decline in paper storage intentions is concerning. Data centers are a step in the right direction, but to ensure long-term viability, IRM needs a comprehensive plan to diversify away from storing paper…

REIT status does not affect fundamentals, but a 2x dividend could bring short-term respite to the shares. Only the IRS knows if IRM would become a REIT; however, if it does, the stock would surely rise on the prospects of a $2+ dividend (~2x C-corp.).

JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) also let investors down with its quarterly results. The fiber optics specialist earned $0.10 per share, with revenue inching 3% higher to $418 million. Analysts were holding out for a profit of $0.11 a share on $431 million in revenue.

Shares of fiber optic company JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) shot higher by 8.4%, led by peer Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN  ) , which surged after it topped Wall Street's expectations in the second quarter and forecast third-quarter revenue well above the consensus. What's really noteworthy about Ciena's quarter was that the majority of revenue growth came from the U.S., not overseas. This speaks to what I've been saying for months about the next cycle of infrastructure growth trickling down from service providers like AT&Tdown to fiber optic companies like JDS Uniphase, and into individual networking parts providers. We are witnessing the next boom in infrastructure spending, and I don't feel it's anywhere near too late to still get in on the gains.

S&P also announced Wednesday that clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and communication technology firm JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU) will be leaving the index, to be replaced by Alliance Data Systems (ADS) and floor-covering producer Mohawk Industries (MHK, Fortune 500).

It was a busy week for regional telcos as CenturyLink joined Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN  ) and Frontier Communications (NASDAQ: FTR  ) in reporting financials. All three companies posted slightly lower revenue as rural landline customers continue to disconnect. Windstream and Frontier also missed on the bottom line. However, after CenturyLink slashed its dividend earlier this year and Frontier cut its rate last year, there were no payout whacks this time around. None of the three stocks lost ground on the week, and that's good news.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Crane (NYSE: CR  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Crane (NYSE: CR  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Crane doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 0.6%, and inventory decreased 2.4%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 2.8%, and inventory contracted 2.4%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 0.4%, and inventory grew 2.0%.
