Top 10 Gas Stocks To Buy Right Now

When it comes to our supply of energy, there is truly no such thing as a free lunch. But just what is the real price we pay, and how does the cost compare with the value we receive? Today, I provide a rundown of the world top three sources of energy, looking at some of the pros and cons of each. I will also list some of the major publicly traded companies that provide each energy source. Next week I will look at the energy options beyond the top three, including nuclear power and renewables.

The three most widely consumed energy sources in the world were all fossil fuels; petroleum, coal, and natural gas, in that order.

When I shed USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NYSE:USNA) from my hypothetical portfolio yesterday, I wasn't necessary in a hurry to replace it with a different pick. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't fill in the slot that USNA left behind with another idea if the right opportunity came along. Well, the right opportunity came along. I'm adding Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR) to my position list, at the same 5% allocation that USANA Health Sciences had.

    Small steps
NRG Energy isn't the only company seeking to use captured carbon to clean up coal and fuel oil production. However, it is investing to build out the necessary carbon dioxide transportation infrastructure to revive even more nearly dead oil fields.

Having done about all it could to increase US crude exports, by granting export licenses to Canada (permitted under the current system), I think the Obama administration is likely to move to grant new export licenses to countries other than Canada in 2014. That policy change would turn US oil producers into a rare bright spot in an energy sector that is looking at stable or falling global oil prices in 2014. Stocks I'd take a look at are Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), Concho Resources (CXO) and Targa Resources Partners (NGLS). The technology of fracturing (and the horizontal style of drilling), is changing America's needs on the energy front. At the epicenter of this infrastructure build-out is Atlas Pipeline Partners (NYSE:APL), a midstream gathering and processing company that trades as a Master Limited Partnership, (MLP). Atlas Pipeline is essentially a middle man between the drillers and long-haul transportation pipelines. It gathers mixed volumes of natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, and butanes, etc. from the thousands of wells drilled by its drilling customers, back through pipelines to its processing plants, which will separate the gas from the NGLs. Both are then sold to long-haul transportation pipelines, which take the two products downstream to the next part of the energy supply chain.

Energy has been the sector most beaten up in 2014. It has yielded up a number of deeply undervalued companies and it's likely that it enjoys some rebound in 2015. (NYSE: EGY), Pacific Ethanol Inc (NASDAQ: PEIX), Statoil ASA (ADR) (NYSE: STO), VOC Energy Trust (NYSE: VOC), Gran Tierra Energy Inc. Advisors' Opinion:

Oil and gas producer, Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) is out with its first-quarter earnings. The company, known for its monthly distribution to investors, is one of a growing number of oil and gas production companies structured as an MLP/LLC. This makes the high yielder a favorite of income-starved investors. Let's take a quick look to ensure that income won't be drying up anytime soon.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Among its peers in the MLP and LLC space, LINN by far hedges the most production. BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  ) , for example, has hedged roughly 75% of its production through 2015, whereas LINN is 100% hedged through 2016. BreitBurn almost exclusively uses swaps as its hedge of choice. It's a similar story at Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) , which also uses swaps to almost exclusively hedge natural gas while using three-way collars to hedge about a third of its oil production. While LINN could get more creative, one thing I'd be surprised to hear is that it's going to join these two peers and leave some of its production unhedged.
