The consumer price index rose 0.1% in February, matching January's increase, the Labor Department said Tuesday. In the past 12 months, prices have risen just 1.1%, down from 1.6% in January and the smallest yearly gain in five months.
Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices rose 0.1% last month and 1.6% in the past year.
Energy prices fell 0.5% because lower gasoline and electricity costs offset higher prices for natural gas and heating oil. Clothes and used cars were also cheaper last month.
Still, consumers took a hit at the grocery store as food costs rose 0.4%, the most in nearly 2 陆 years. Beef prices jumped 4% in February, the most in more than 10 years, as recent droughts have pushed up cattle feed prices. Milk, cheese and other dairy prices also rose.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Philip Springer]
Kinder Morgan is a pioneer in the rapidly growing niche of energy master limited partnerships (MLPs). But the company reversed course this week, and announced that it will put all of its MLP assets into its traditional C corporation, Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI).
Kinder Morgan’s various companies operate a huge network of “midstream” assets: pipelines and terminals that move and store oil and natural gas. The company is a direct, lower-risk beneficiary of the new energy boom in the U.S.
In a $44 billion deal, general partner Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) will acquire the outstanding shares of KinderMorgan Energy Partners LP(NYSE: KMP), Kinder Morgan Management LLC(NYSE: KMR) andEl Paso Pipeline Partners LP(NYSE: EPB).
The new Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) will have an estimated enterprise value of about $140 billion100 billion of market value and $40 billion of debtaking it the third-largest energy company in the U.S., after ExxonMobil and Chevron.
As of the announcement, the deal valued KMP and KMR at $90 per unit, and EPB at $39. All are significant premiums over their prices before the announcement. However, KMP, KMR and EPB now are trading well above those levels, as is KMI.
Richard Kinder, co-founder and chief executive of Kinder Morgan, basically set in motion the increasingly popular MLP structure in the 1990s. MLPs pay no corporate taxes and distribute their profits to unit holders.
MLPs over time have delivered high, growing payouts, which have fueled price appreciation too. The number of MLPs has grown from just 38 a decade ago to 120 now, with a combined market value of some $600 billion.
But KMP, the biggest MLP of all ($45 billion market value), in particular has had two problems. MLPs need to constantly buy or build new assets in order to keep increasing their high distributions to investors. But KMP had grown so large that it was hard to find suitable targets.
Secon - [By Dimitra DeFotis]
Kinder Morgan’s corporate structure is convoluted.Kinder Morgan is the general partner, which reaps distributions from underlying businesses. It pays a 4.2% yield. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, the main pipeline MLP enterprise, pays a 6.5% yield in the form of a cash distribution like most MLPs. Kinder Morgan Management(KMR) was created to pay distributions in shares given the tax-and-accounting headaches of MLPs. But KMR still offers tax deferrals. Following an acquisition, Kinder also controlsEl Paso Pipeline Partners(EPB), whose yield is 5.7%. Kinder’s chief financial officer said that the enterprises could be combined at some point. Post from the industry’s biggest conference in Mayhere.

And finally, there are the Kinder Morgan triplets, Kinder Morgan, Inc. (KMI) and Kinder Morgan Management (KMR) and Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP), which fell 6%, 4.7% and 3%, respectively today. The reason for the drop: a press release from Hedgeye Risk Management, which called Kinder Morgan “a house of cards,” and said to expect a report on Sept. 10, explaining why. Deutsche Bank came out with its own note today defending Kinder Morgan, but the damage was done. Considering that Hedgeye’s Kevin Kaiser (and our own Andrew Bary) got Linn Energy (LINE) right, you can see why.

Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR )
Topping the list with a five-year compound annual growth rate of 220% is Magnum Hunter Resources. First, I will point out that the company started at a very low base as its market cap was just $10 million as its share price bottomed out at $0.37 in 2009, when its current management team assumed leadership. However, that team has led the company to phenomenal growth in cash from operations since taking over. - [By Rick Munarriz]

Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR )
The last company I'll be watching this quarter is Magnum Hunter, which will finally be delivering its first quarter results on July 9. The company has been behind in providing investors with results this year after it fired its auditors, which caused its annual report, and subsequent first-quarter report, to be delayed. - [By Matt DiLallo]
One such company that's hated by investors is Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR ) . As of two months ago, investors had sold short 20% of shares outstanding; however, that has increased to a staggering 32% of shares outstanding as of April 15. With shares down by a third over the past month, it would appear that the shorts are right about this company. Let's drill down into what happened and see what investors can expect.
