Top 5 Growth Stocks For 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of digital printing technologist Electronics for Imaging (NASDAQ: EFII  ) popped 12% today after its quarterly results toppedWall Street expectations.

So what: The company's first-quarter results were so strong -- adjusted EPS of $0.33 on revenue of $171.4 million versus the consensus of $0.32 and $165.4 million -- that analysts have choice but to raise their valuation estimates yet again. In fact, the report marked the 13th consecutive quarterof revenue and EPS increases-- driven by growth in all three segments -- giving investors plenty of confidence in its profitability going forward.

Now what: For the second quarter, management now expectsadjusted EPS of $0.34-$0.36 on record revenue of $174 million-$176 million. "With new breakthrough products across our portfolio and sales opportunities at trade shows around the globe," CEO Guy Gecht said, "we look for this robust demand to continue into the current quarter as EFI's innovation continues to help customers drive growth and productivity in their businesses." Of course, with the stock now up roughly 100% from its 52-week lows, I'd wait for some of the excitement to fade before buying into that bullishness.

Advisors' Opinion:

Costco is one of many retailers ranging from Nordstrom (JWN) on the high end to Walmart (WMT) on the low end to generate earnings that lagged Wall Street forecasts. Nonetheless, judging from its earnings, COST is holding its own in these challenging economic times.

    Then and now
We won't dwell on the past, since it's not going to help us predict the future, but it would be silly not to hit the highlights. Starting at the top, Macy's has increased its revenue for four years running, and it hit $27 billion in 2012. Earnings per share have kept up as well, rising from $0.78 in 2009 to $3.29 last year. That's a 321% increase over four years. To put some context around that, Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) has grown earnings per share by 78% over the same period.

The hits keep coming at high-end retailer Nordstrom (JWN).

    Bloomberg

After reporting a decline in fourth-quarter earnings and weak sales, shares traded down 0.3% to $59.24 today. And Sterne, Agee & Leach Charles Grom, while acknowledging that the fourth quarter was K,warned that there were issues developing underneath. He explains:

Beneath the surface, there are two disturbing trends emerging that shouldn go unnoticed, including: 1) a more promotional environment/gross profit margin risk (as Nordstrom price matches); and 2) full line cannibalization (via e-commerce), which structurally compresses Nordstrom top-line algo. All told, the Nordstrom experience is one of the best in retail, but the stock is dead money for the foreseeable future, in our view.

Grom accentuated a few positives that included a rise in same-store sales by 2.6% and decent earnings. A rise in inventory levels and lower EPS guidance were some of the negatives, Grom said.

Nordstrom’s pain didn’t cause stand in the way of gains for some other department store stocks. Dillard’s (DDS) gained 1.5% to $89.33, while Macy’s (M) rose 0.5% to $53.71. Even J.C. Penney (JCP) had a better day. It finished down just 0.2% at $5.64.

Meanwhile, as fellow Fool Andrew Marder just pointed out, competitors Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) and Macy's (NYSE: M  ) have remained solidly profitable, and both just posted comparable-store sales increases of 0.8% and 3.8%, respectively. Macy's, for its part, even saw earnings per share rise 28% year over year during its most recent quarter. In addition, both Macy's and Nordstrom sport reasonable price-to-earnings ratios below 17, and they offer solid 2% dividends to keep long-term investors happy.
